I love to snack on some sweet and salty treats when I’m watching TV or reading a book, but I’ve already tried most American snacks. After deciding to explore some abroad candies abroad, I’ve rediscovered my love for a good snack.
Being a fan of all things Japanese, I’ve been enjoying different Japanese snack boxes by trying out some of the classic and traditional treats from the country.
Not sure how you can get started with these foreign treats? Then taste the snacks below. These snack boxes are perfect for anyone looking to try classic Japanese candy.
Tonosama Dagashi Japanese Snack Box
“My 10-year-old daughter requested this because she was interested in finding out more about Japan. We had a 1-hour tasting party on the living room floor and we compared the snacks to each other and to American snacks. We loved some, and we hated some. She took some duplicates to school and shared them with her friends. You can tell a lot about the culture by common flavors, textures, packaging, serving sizes, and a lot of other things that we saw in this box. We don’t have a lot of exposure to Japanese culture here in Missouri, so this was a wonderful learning and bonding experience for my daughter, her friends, and me.” — Amazon Customer
Shinobi Dagashi Set
“YOU GET SO MUCH STUFF FOR THE PRICE! Yeah, it’s mostly individual pieces of things, but everything is different. I even got some stuff I’ve never seen before in this package.”
“It’s important to know that this is all good stuff too. There’s nothing fishy or too foreign to Western tastes. I got chocolate, gummies, hard candies, savory snacks, and even Japanese cider drink tablets that you dissolve in water!”
“I’d 100% recommend it if you’re interested at all in Japanese or foreign goodies.” — Emily Everhart
Ninjapo Japan Snacks Assortment
“My kids like to try different things. They still come over for family night even after they left home. They totally loved these. Even my 78 yr old mom loved trying them and had favorites. I’m so glad I bought them and think you will too.” — T. Horner
SUSHICANDY The Sweet taste of Japan Box
“This is a great gift for teens because i am one and i really like this. I got it for myself because i love Japanese food and wanted to taste what kinda snack they had. It’s really cool and would most deferentially buy again.” — Ruby
OHIMESAMA Snack Selection
“Aside from having little control over the snacks you receive, the OHIMESAMA Snack Selection 40 pc. assortment is a fun exploration of current “Dagashi” in Japanese culture. Back in the late 80s, I spent my high school years on the island of Okinawa, so I was exposed to quite a bit of their pop culture drinks, snacks, and candies. This assortment from OHIMESAMA was purchased for my daughter, and while she’s enjoyed some of the offerings, others had too much umami for her. At least she had the opportunity to try them, and I my wife and I end up getting the shrimp crisps and similarly unusual foods while her tastes run more to Pocky sticks and sweet/sour candies.”
“These offerings are the equivalent of penny candy and Japanese junk food, but the eye-popping packaging and small form factor make they a lot of fun to both see and eat. It would be the perfect gift for anyone into modern day Japan and it’s culture.” — Kort
Ultimate Japanese and Korean Snack Box
“My teenager who never stops eating was very happy when he opened this gift. The smile on his little jerky teenage face made my day.” — Andrea R. Marrapodi
Samurai Dagashi Set
My daughter and I had a blast during quarantine finding things to do. Finding different cultures to explore was one thing we decided to do. It was so much fun to follow along on YouTube and eat the snacks they would talk about in other countries. These snacks were right on target with the ones advertised on YouTube and shown in anime stories. It was a blast and well worth the money.” — P. M. Jones
Samurai Kid Set
“I wish I had taken a pic before we ate some of them but I am very impressed with this package. Did not get 2 of anything so every piece was a different flavor or type of candy/snack. Nothing was broken even though there were some delicate pieces. Everything we’ve tried so far tasted very fresh. Will definitely order again.” — Amazon Customer
Japanese Dagashi Assortment Snacks
“For someone who likes to try different foods and snacks, this is a great mix. Not too much of any one thing. Some snacks are small, for example, just one candy the size of a chewing gum. Perfect if you simply just want a “taste” of something, and if there’s something you don’t care for much, it’s not so bad. For example, I’m not a great fan of pickled dried fish which is similar to our dried flat beef jerky and looks like fruit leather, so I was happy that there was only one of those in there. Other snacks were larger because it was a little bag of chips or something. The assortment is really good.”
“There’s a little bit of everything in there. I would get this again if I had a craving to “mix-it-up” with my snacking. Flavors cover all spectrums of what may considered as typical Japanese and Asian snack flavors, from squid, fish, pickled, kimchi rice crackers, ume flavored mints, grape flavored candy, soda flavored candy, cookies, puffed rice snacks, coconut jelly candy, chocolate… it’s all in there in one form or another. Highly recommend if you want to try out something different. Expiration dates are all good.” — Amazon Customer
Mashi Box
“You get a lot of good quality items for the amount you pay. I liked that it came with an info sheet showing all of the snacks in my box and had a description of what it is! The packaging was great; nothing came damaged. Would recommend if you are looking to try some new Asian snacks.” — Amazon Customer
