With the pandemic still going on, Face to face classes is still suspended. Homeschooling is the best education we can have for our kids as of this moment. If you are thinking of how you can help your child achieve high scores especially with the hard subject “Math” you are on the right track! Here are some Math Homeschool books to help you this year.
Awesome Engineering Activities for Kids
“My kindergartener (a big STEM enthusiast) has been struggling in COVID-19 quarantine / homeschool the last month+. I decided to lean in more to the learning-thu-play approach and ordered this book. Within 10min of its arrival we were building and having fun. Its been less than a week and we have an engineering box set up and at least 5 completed builds. Its been a game changer! Almost all the materials were things we had in the house already, and those that weren’t were easily purchased at our next pharmacy/dollar store run. Can not recommend this more.” – A. Tilles
180 Days of Problem Solving for 1st Grade
“I like this book a lot better than the math book they are using at his kindergarten, because it involves actual math and not just drawing things and counting them. We’re only about half way through, but I feel the book provides a good basis for understanding adding and subtracting. The authors sometimes present multiple ways of solving a problem, which I think is helpful.” – David
Saxon Math 8/7 with Prealgebra
“We had been using another excellent math curriculum but found that this one is a bit better as you get into high school. For this reason, I am going to cut over to Saxon at the 7th grade with this book going forward. Results with Saxon for my older children are excellent. The curriculum is rigorous and prepares the student for SATs and university. We use the Art Reed AND the Saxon Dive CDs to help illuminate and give further examples. With Saxon, your student will be well taught. Having said that, if no one in your home is comfortable with math, it would be helpful if you had just one person that you could run a problem or two by if the solutions key doesn’t suffice. Otherwise, there is also the Saxon Teacher CDs which are lengthier and may give further instruction. The Art Reed and Dive are usually 8-12 minutes a piece and are sufficient for most student. I love this curriculum and have total confidence that it will prepare my students for any major requiring math, or give them a high school exposure that has the depth and breadth to be the last math that they will have if they pursue something in the Humanities.” – Mom of five
Spectrum Seventh Grade Math Workbook
“I started tutoring a 12 year old with some gaps in her math learning. Using ZOOM isn’t as effective or stable as 40 minutes at a table with pencil. Since I could not access her school site, we decided to use SPECTRUM for the summer along with flash cards and a multiplication table blank to embed basic skills and review 7th grade core topics. I love the book, sent hers without the answer key, kept one for myself. Lots of practice, easy instruction/explanation that can be assisted by me. As a former special educator in middle school, I have worked with the gaps. Hope this helps! I know I’m enjoying pencil to paper working the problems out myself before our sessions. Spectrum..always a good text choice.” – DOColt
Horizons 4th Grade Math Student Book 1
“I have used Horizons math for many years. I like the circular pattern it follows, the frequent reviews are really helpful. There are worksheets in the teacher guide for problem areas. The children enjoy the relatively “quick” amount of work and the puzzles. The drawback is that the teacher’s manual doesn’t help much with explanations. So far, (up through grade 4) this hasn’t been a problem. But as the math gets more difficult I may need to switch or get teaching help off the internet.” – B. Kennedy
First Grade Math with Confidence Bundle
“My daughter has adhd and finding the right math for her has been a little difficult. I finally decided to try this math it looked intriguing so I thought I’d give it a try. When I received it my first impressions were the workbook was cute and colorful but the teachers manual looked a little daunting so I was skeptical. Well I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I love this math! The teacher manual ended up not being as stressful as I first anticipated, everything is laid out very simply for me. The way the lessons are laid out are awesome. There are many simple activities with each lesson, it keeps my daughters attention and mine as well. I don’t feel like I’m beating my head on a table trying to get through it. It also teaches in a way that I feel is great for all learning styles. My only complaint is that the pages in the back of the teachers manual that you copy and print are a little hard to find because the page number is not given in the instructions, only the title of the page is given . I would love if they added the page numbers so I can flip to it quicker. Overall an awesome math curriculum!” – Amazon Customer
Mastering Essential Math Skills, Book 1
“We are loving this straight forward approach to learning math. We have used Saxon for several years and needed something different. We are 12 lessons in and haven’t had any tears (mom or student) which is a welcome relief😊 For my daughter this approach is definitely a better fit!” – Kelly
Kindergarten Math
“This is just what I needed for my girls. Both my 3, and 5 year old are working on one of these. It’s basically review for the 5-year old, but I decided she needed to go through it because the kindergarten workbook she had gone through didn’t get her familiar with telling time or recognizing coins and adding them up. Also, math is not an easy subject for her.” – Snip
No-Nonsense Algebra
“This book was so helpful in helping me refresh my basic math skills. It has everything in here from pre-algebra, decimals and fractions, geometry and problem solving solutions. I highly recommend to students needing extra help or adults returning to school after years of being out.” – Summer Sunshine
IXL | The Ultimate Grade 3 Math Workbook
“I really like these books and do plan to keep them in my children’s work stack. I am a homeschooling mom and I have a 4th grader; 2nd grader and 1st grader. For the older 2; I use these books to supplement their Math U see curriculum but for my first grader an Ixl first grade level book is his complete math curriculum along with Ixl’s website. I thought I had pictures but the workbook has math challenges and various puzzles that to me makes math appealing but also gives a different perspective (I cant think of a better term) but it is simply not columns of math problems.” – Naairah Smith
