Best Bedtime Stories To Read To Your Kids

Shalom Onyx

Growing up was such a great time for me. I bonded a lot with my parents and learned a lot of life lessons. Now grown, I have come to discover that this was probably due to the books we read together, and the subtle bonds we created during this period. Reading these children’s books also broadened my language repertoire, and altogether I gained some valuable prompts which aided my development both socially and emotionally.

Reading before bedtime can help to stimulate curiosity in kids, coupled with the desire to learn more and acquire knowledge. The importance of learning cannot be overestimated; as readers are indeed leaders.

If Animals Kissed Good Night

“Lovely book to read before bed, my 8 month old daughter enjoys listening to the rhymes and turning the words, the text isn’t too long so she doesn’t get bored and the illustrations are lovely too. One of those books you don’t mind reading again and again!” — Laurell

The Going-To-Bed Book

“My 8 month old baby loves this book. When we fusses and turns when we try to change him in the evening, we simply take out the book and start flipping through the pages and reading it. It always calms him down. Not sure why but this is hands down his favorite book and his interest in it does not seem to diminish. It’s pretty easy to memorize for parents and generally a very cute story except…. the characters go to exercise AFTER they have taken their baths! Who does that? haha. but i let that slide because the book works miracles in calming my baby down.” — Amazon Customer

Time for Bed, Elmo!

“This book… My son LOVES this book! He just turned 2 and can count all the sheep at the end. We read a story every night before bed and he requests this book the most. He loves pointing out the things Elmo is talking about. I with there were more books like this one! The story is cute and silly. I am SOOO happy I bought this book. If you read to your baby get this book!” — Amazon Customer

The Goodnight Train

“Great bedtime book for my train crazy autistic 5 year old! Very cute, high quality and well written/illustrated.” — Kate

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site

“My 2 year old son loves cars, trucks and construction vehicles. I purchased this because we were getting a little sick of reading goodnight moon every night. This quickly eclipsed Goodnight Moon, we read this every night at bed and sometimes during the day. The coolest part is wowing our friends when we drive by new construction and he yells out the correct names for the trucks.” — Amazon Customer

Just Go to Bed

“When I was a kid I use to enjoy this book with my parents and lost it though the years. I came across it on Amazon and it gave me flashbacks of when I was kid, just being a kid. I am sharing this with my daughter now it brings me comfort to know we both have read the same story. I can share those warm feelings as we read the book together.” — Amazon Customer

Good Night Little Turtle

“This book is all about how each little animal has its OWN bed! This is just the preparation I want to give my 16 month old as I transition him out of sleeping with me half the night to sleeping in his crib all night, with me not in the room. I literally was looking for a book like this and I found it! I’m going to take photos of all the people in our family and everyone in his or her own bed, and make that part of the book too. Glad to find this sweet little book.” — Amazon Customer

Goodnight Moon

“Read this to my children, gave as gifts to my grandchildren and just purchased it again for my great grandson. This is perfect for a little person who is too young for most children’s books. I like the way the pictures become darker as bedtime approaches. The board book can be touched by my five month old without it being harmed. I also like the fact that the central character is is bunny and culturally natural. Two of my great grandsons are mostly Scandinavian but the youngest little guy is half Hispanic/Dominican and all children can identify with a bunny.” — Diana

Llama Llama Red Pajama

“If you search on YouTube for raps of this book, there are a bunch of videos of famous rappers putting their own spin on this book. I imitate one of them when reading this to my 8 month old and he loves it. It’s the only book he pays attention to.” — Lindsay

The Napping House

“As a former Professor of Children’s Literature now retired, I promised my Great Grandchildren at birth, that I would provide them each with 10 age and interest appropriate books each year. The Napping House was one of 20 starter board books for my two newest Greats! I loved it as a Professor and hope my babies will enjoy it as well.” — Amazon Customer
