We all want our kids to grow up smart; which will give them a headstart in life. The problem is, is that I’ve noticed my kid having some difficulty adapting to new challenges faced in math class. So while the standard textbooks at school are great, adding a few extra lessons out of the classroom really helps.
Some of these books make the idea of learning addition, subtraction, and other problem-solving skills fun – by adding some colorful pictures or giving your kid an easy-to-understand explanation. Be sure to check out the math books below — they’ll be sure to help smarten up the young one.
School Zone – Addition & Subtraction Workbook
“This is a great math book! My son actually requests it! That’s right…he’ll ask to do the pages unprompted.”
“And for those who say some problems give a negative answer, you’re reading the directions at the top wrong. It says: form a math sentence…and shows the example of 4 turtles very close to 6 turtles and the math sentence they wrote out in the example is 10-6=4. Just because you thought it meant 4-6=-2 doesn’t mean it’s wrong. You read it wrong. Look at the example first. And also…what’s wrong with teaching negative numbers if you go that route? Getting ahead!” – Amazon Customer
School Zone – Big Math 1-2 Workbook
“I homeschool. I do Saxon Math for the older grades, but THIS workbook is PERFECT for the advanced/older kindergartner through a kind of behind second grader. It is SUPER cute. I LOVE the fun illustrations. It covers ALL the math info a kid would need in that age range. My 8-year-old daughter is really smart. But I pulled her out of kindergarten a few years ago. And she was really stubborn with me and didn’t do what I asked. She played A LOT. Some people think it’s great to let kids play in that age range, anyway. So, now that I am MAKING my kids sit down and do their assignments, I have found that she doesn’t know her very basic math facts, even. She is about a K-1st grade level in math. She loves this book.”
“My son younger than her is advanced for his age and he also loves working out of this book. He is in 1st grade now. This book covers everything they need to get them ready to start working out of the “Saxon Math Intermediate, Grade 3” text book. I use the one with the picture of the bicycle on the front cover. When the child is finished with that one, then go directly into “Saxon Math 5/4.” When the child is done with that book, he is ready to go straight into the “Saxon Math Algebra 1″ book. Or, your smart third grader can just start right at Saxon Math 5/4. Then for 5th grade, he can do Math 8/7. THEN go right into Algebra 1 the next year.” — Amazon Customer
1st Grade Math Workbook Addition and Subtraction
I bought these books, when I heard I might be watching one of my great grand children a few hours every Wednesday. He is far advanced for his age of six, and seems to enjoy doing math problems and phonics books as well. But unfortunately, he has not been to see me do to health problems in the family.” — Ruth Silva
IXL The Ultimate Grade 1 Math Workbook
“I like what it covers but perhaps not how it is covered.. lots of number lines and repetition in the beginning… adding to 5,6,7,8,9 takes up too much of the book. Was wanting more activities like those in teen numbers and double digits. It’s okay and we eare using it! But it starts below grade, and then with little practice is suddenlt advanced.” — Aletha I.
Spectrum First Grade Math Workbook
“Good Practice Book. I’m a Homeschooler and i couple it with hands on concepts and printables from superteacherworksheets.com. I have used all math books the grades up to eighth grade.” — A. Suin
My First Grade Math Workbook
I bought this book for my grandfather, who is suffering with dementia, to help him keep his mind working. He absolutely loves it! He gets excited when he sees me to show me all of the work he has done.” — Breanna Winfield
Math Workbook Grade 1
“This book follows Common Core and the old way of doing math. Kids get to learn both. There is a lot of repetition so the kids memorize number facts. The problems go in order, so if you know what 5+5 is, you can figure out what 5+6 is. Once my son figured that out, he got very excited.” — Amazon Customer
1st Grade Jumbo Math Success Workbook: 3 Books In 1
“Thank you is not enough for the people who put this book together. As a father concerned at my 7 year old sons lack on interest in maths and watching his interest slip further and further away this book has turned it around in 3 months. The real skill of this book is its ability to engage the child and allow them to feel empowered and on their own journey of discovery of maths. Our son is a visual learner he has a huge artistic ability and brain and this book engages it with pictures and converts it into mathematical learning. I told my son to stop his maths work the other day and he said “No…I love maths, well not the maths at school but I love this maths, it helps me in the real world” I know my son will be okay with maths now, he has started the journey and is loving it. Thank You so very much…” — Dan Abdelnoor
1st Grade Common Core Math
“Got this book to teach my kids the common core math problems, not to teach him math. That is important to understand. He is very good at math because he is also home schooled. But he was taught traditional real math. In school they do these common core problems, which is a strange way to do things. Anyway, so, this book is good for learning how to do the class room problems, but if you want to learn actual traditional math, you’ll need another book as well or you’ll need to make your own traditional math worksheets.” — Amazon Customer
Brain Quest Workbook: Grade 1
“I use these workbooks to round out our homeschool learning. The kids do well with them and usually enjoy the work. Since we are relaxed/eclectic and do not use any comprehensive curriculum, the workbooks have helped me greatly in pinpointing particular areas that require further practice. They are also helpful when I’m putting together portfolios. Written work in each subject is all right there in one place, and all I have to do is tear out some good samples of each and file them with the rest of our records. We’ve used Pre-K through 4th grade so far, and I highly recommend the series!” — Jenny
